How do I earn a medical assistant certification in Massachusetts?

Medical assistants within the state of Massachusetts do not need to be certified. However, certain employers may require you to be.[viii] Information on similar occupations that do require certification are below.

  • Physical Therapy Assistant- requires certification via the Board of Registration of Allied Health Professions. The requirements for this certification include fees, an exam, and proof that you are a graduate of a 2-year program in physical therapy approved by the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association).   • EMT- requires certification via the Department of Public Health Emergency Medical Services. To complete the certification, you must possess the Massachusetts basic EMT certification or equivalent. You must also successfully complete an Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) approved EMT-Intermediate course with classroom, clinical, and field components based on the U.S. Department of Transportation EMT-Intermediate curriculum and all other Massachusetts OEMS training requirements.[x]
